Many of the pieces you see on this site do not attempt to depict an actual place, but have evolved
from something observed or felt whilst out walking and exploring the landscape.

The physical process of drawing and mark making is an integral part of the work and I approach each
canvas as I would a sketchbook, hopefully creating something fluid and spontaneous.

Although much of my work is predominantly executed in charcoal, I try not to restrict myself to any one
medium and prefer to allow the subject matter to dictate the process and materials. Sometimes the
materials and the experience can take over and like a child at play I have no option but to follow this
and experiment.

I love it when the piece takes on a life of its own and I am pointed to another path of investigation
and discovery. At other times the inherent quality or spirit of the subject matter demands my
attention and by its very nature requires an airing. This is an important part of the creative process
for me and is something I strive for in the work. When the right balance is achieved it can be a
wonderful experience.

Tree Hugger

Trees have always fascinated me and walking amongst them never fails to inspire. We build and
preserve monuments and statues in honour of our history, yet very often forget the importance of
these ancient eco-systems. These truly magnificent forms are our heritage, our mythology and
they deserve to be protected as living monuments. I hope my work goes someway to describing
the experience of these incredible natural sculptures and landscapes.
